Objectives and Lessons
Lesson 1 - Introduction
Objective - Students will experiment with different ways of exploring and developing stories, ideas, and experiences
Rationale - The purpose of this lesson is to introduce the concept of personal narratives and have students think about the purposes of telling a story
Assessment - Students responses to our brainstorming activity will determine if they understand the purpose of telling a story
LESSON PLAN AND SEQUENCE
As a whole class, the instructor will talk to students about what personal narratives are and relay to students that they will be creating small personal narrative about a small moment in time. The instructor will discuss why people tell stories. Instructor will help students fill out a brainstorming graphic organizer to help students understand why people tell stories. The instructor will type students ideas, however, it students feel they are able to contribute a typed response, Google Slides allows learners to do that as well.
Student Instructions
Please go to the Google Slides and as a class we will brainstorm "why people tell stories".

Lesson 2 - Watermelon and Seed Ideas
Objective - Students will continue to experiment with different ways of exploring and developing stories, ideas, and experiences
Rationale - The purpose of this lesson is to have students recognize the difference between big and small story ideas so students can start thinking of their own small ideas
Assessment - Students responses to our brainstorming activity will demonstrate if they have met this objective
LESSON PLAN AND SEQUENCE
Students will be asked to watch a video pertaining to writing small moment stories and as a whole class students will brainstorm big and small story ideas using Google Slides. As mentioned previously the instructor will type students responses, however, if students are able to type responses on their own they may.

Rationale - The purpose of this lesson is to have students recognize the components of a good oral narrative
Assessment - Students will be using a checklist to assess a good narrative and students responses will be used to determine if they understand the components of a good narrative
LESSON PLAN AND SEQUENCE
The instructor will introduce a simple checklist to students in Google Slides and review each component of the checklist. This checklist will serve as a reference point for students throughout this unit and words will be continually added to help students when they begin creating their storyboards.
The instructor will read "An A From Miss Keller" by Patricia Polacco. As a whole class discussion, student will determine if the book had the components of a good oral narrative using the checklist.
Student Instructions
Go to the google documents to review our checklist docs.google.com/document/d/1Pv3kEB3Lx8CroEF_aLGnithRyPPbu7ccR_j7R69DyMQ/edit?usp=sharing
We are going to read a story and think about whether this story fits within our checklist
Lesson 4 - What Makes as Good Narrative? Continued...
Objective - Students will continue to use knowledge of how oral language is used in a variety of contexts to construct and confirm meaning
Rationale - The purpose of this lesson is to have students continue to practice recognizing the components of a good oral narrative
Assessment - Students will be using a checklist to assess a good narrative and students responses to the stories they read will help determine whether they have met the objective
LESSON PLAN AND SEQUENCE
Review the checklist on Google Slides and review each component of an oral narrative. The instructor will ask students to work in pairs to listen to several stories using the Scribjab website which will allow students to read books created by other students. Scribjab.com allows students to find books in their own language and also has an audio function so students can listen to the stories. In pairs, students will have to talk with one another and use their checklist to determine whether the stories they read were examples of good oral narratives.
Student Instructions

Lesson 5 - Let's Brainstorm Again
Objective - Students will continue to use knowledge of how oral language is used in a variety of contexts to construct and confirm meaning
Rationale - The purpose of this lesson is to have students start thinking about a small moment in time in their own lives for their own personal narratives
Assessment - Students' responses the brainstorming exercise will demonstrate whether they have met the above objective
LESSON PLAN AND SEQUENCE
Students will watch a short video about brainstorming ideas for their personal narratives. As a whole class discussion, students will generate a list of small ideas that could be used for their personal narratives using a Google Slide. This will serve as a reference point for students as they generate their own ideas.
Student Instructions

Lesson 6 - My Narrative
Objective - Students will create narratives that have beginnings, middles, and ends
Rationale - The purpose of this lesson is to have students begin creating their own personal narratives and organizing their ideas using a storyboard
Assessment - Students' completed storyboards will demonstrate whether they have met the objectives for this lesson
LESSON PLAN AND SEQUENCE
Once students have selected an idea for their personal narrative, students will be asked to complete a storyboard on Google Slides so they can begin organizing their ideas into an oral narrative. The story board page will be shared with each student on Google Drive. An example of a completed storyboard has also been provided on Google Slides for students' reference. In addition, sentence frames have been provided as scaffolding for leaners with limited literacy skills. Students will use the checklist from previous lessons to guide their work and for a reference for vocabulary. At this stage it would be a good idea for the instructor to do several mini-lessons on sentence structure and word order.
Student Instructions

Lesson 7 - Oral Presentation
Objective - Students will speak in a clear voice, with appropriate volume, at an understandable pace, and with expression
Rationale - The purpose of this lesson is to help students understand the components of a good oral presentation
LESSON PLAN AND SEQUENCE

Lesson 8 - Recording and Rubric
Objective - Students will speak in complete sentences with a clear voice and expression; Students will share their own oral text with others to identify strengths and ideas for improvement
Rationale - The purpose of this lesson is to have students begin recording their oral narratives so they can start making improvements and seek support from their peers.

LESSON PLAN AND SEQUENCE
Students will be asked to review a rubric that will be used to assess their narratives. The instructor will discuss each section to ensure all students understand the target. Please note the rubric has been kept very simple so beginner English language learners can understand and follow the rubric. The criteria in the rubric could be added to as students explored the components of a good narrative and oral presentation. Please also note that students should already have an understanding of how to assess their and their peers' work using rubrics. Students will then be asked to use VoiceThread to record their stories. VoiceThread is an interactive Web 2.0 tool that allows students to record videos and stories. Students do not have to sign up for VoiceThread as all students are able to use the instructor's account provided the instructor gives students the password. Once the students have recorded their short narratives, the instructor will ask them to use the rubric to assess their recordings. At this point, the instructor would have to spend time reviewing some general aspects of VoiceThread so students understood how to record videos and add video comments.
